“Bëngnüs te nüsc paîsc y te nostes valades!” The Ladin language developed more than 2000 years ago from the mixing of Roman with Rhaetic culture and survived throughout the centuries up to modern times. The development of the antique language has been accompanied by the formation and growth of a unique Ladin cultural aura, comprehensive of identity, mentality, music and cuisine. Today, Ladin is spoken by about 30.000 people in the valleys in the heart of the Dolomites. Children learn their native tongue at home and at school and use it in everyday-life as their main medium of communication.
Ladin people have always been open-minded and receptive toward their neighbours and have therefore been able to make advantageous connections while conserving their own identity.
At the end of the 19th century, the Ladins started developing their talents and began to specialize progressively in touristical services. Hospitality, competence and fluency of speaking have helped the Ladin valleys, and San Vigilio di Marebbe, become the most attractive touristical resorts in the alpine area.
Guests, who visit our villages, can experience and learn about our Ladin culture on different occasions: they will hear the people speaking Ladin in the streets or in the lodging facilities, the Ladin news on TV, the toponyms on houses and signposts and a huge variety of publications exposed in book shops, in the centre of cultural studies “Istitut Cultural Ladin Micurà de Rü” and in the Ladin museum “Museum Ladin Ciastel de Tor”. These institutions work on the preservation and development of Ladin culture and offer visitors a throughout insight into the actual cultural and linguistic situation of the Ladins. The centres are open to the public and have regulated visiting hours.
