The Nature Park Fanes Senes Braies, which begins right at the edge of San Vigilio, is for sure the most precious attraction in the summer entertainment program of most part of Val Badia. The park consists of a wide alpine plateau blessed with spectacular scenery, lush green meadows and pale toothed rocks, little alpine lakes, paths and trails leading to cute little mountain refuges, an infinity of plants and flowers, an abundance of wildlife and lots of legends which tell stories of kings, princesses, sorcerers and tales of long lost times.
The nature park was established by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano in 1982 to protect this very special area of wilderness between Marebbe and Cortina d’Amprezzo and to conserve and enhance its natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage. The access to the park is allowed to hikers and bikers only, while any other motorized traffic is excluded. The park has therefore become a paradise for all those who love to walk or cycle through nature in perfect peace and tranquillity. In the park, there is also a wide range of named climbing routes for climbers of all abilities and some interesting cultural paths along the trails of World War 1.
The nature park Fanes Senes Braies is the natural habitat of many species of uncommon animals like the golden eagle, the ibex, the marmot and the chamois, but not only. There are also lots of amphibians and reptiles which love the stony, but fertile calcareous grounds and the limestone rocks pervaded by caves and canals washed out by the flowing water. The area of Fanes and Senes counts over 200 smaller and deeper caves with interesting archaeological sites that have constituted an important attraction for speleologists over the last 20 years.
In summer, the area of alpine pasture of the nature park is grazed by herds of cattle and hundreds of sheep, goats and horses. The shepherds are specialized in the production of exquisite cheese and speck, the basic ingredients of our Dolomitic gastronomy.
In winter, this vivid and colourful world is transformed into an endless white surface, out of which only the highest peaks stick out. That’s the ideal time for ski-hiking, snow-shoeing and sledging tours, but only after having enjoyed a tasteful meal in one of the cosy mountain refuges.
The Nature Park Fanes Senes Braies, in the heart of the Dolomites, disposes of a visitor and information centre, which is located in San Vigilio di Marebbe, at the edge of the village and at the entrance to the nature park. The centre, designed and built in modern style, holds a rich exhibition that displays lots interesting facts about the park and its history and provides valuable information about flora and fauna, as well as geology and mythology of the area. It proposes a variety of walking and hiking tours and informs visitors on appropriate behaviour in the park. A visit to the exhibition is fun for both, young and old. Entrance is free.
