Ladin, the native language of the local population, is a Rhaeto-Romance tongue spoken not only in Val Badia but also in the valleys and villages surrounding the Sella massif (Val Gardena, Fodom, Fassa and Ampezzo) and as far away as in the Friuli region and in the Swiss canton of Grisons. Taught in schools and used in every-day life throughout the Ladin-speaking community, it is the mother tongue of around 30,000 locals.
